Percy was one of seven children born to Edmund and Anna

1901 – Percy was living with his family in Tilney All Saints. His father was a yardman

1911 – Percy lived with his family in East Lexham, Swaffham. His father was a yardman, and Percy was a farm labourer

1914/1918 – Private Percy Charles Bear (regimental number 1971/20180/242623) served with the South Staffordshire regiment

1919 – Percy appeared on the Kettlesone Absentee Voters list, living in Fakenham Road, Little Snoring

Percy was awarded the British and Victoria medals

1923 – Percy married Ethel Hubbard (born 16/3/1900), Mitford, Norfolk

1939 - Percy was living at Alethorpe Cottages, Kettlestone, with his wife Ethel, and their daughters Peggy J (born 19/9/1924) and Bertha. Percy was working as a horseman

1911 – Alfred, a clerk with a catering company, is living with his mother, a widow, in Fulham, London

Alfred married Nelly Green (from Kettlestone) 8th October 1913, in Middlesex

1913 – At the time of his marriage, Alfred was a milk carrier in Middlesex

1915/18 Private Alfred Henry Best (regimental no 260271) served with the 2/8th Worcesters regiment

1919 – Alfred appears on the Absentee Voters list, living at Cherry Tree House, Kettlestone, Norfolk

1920 – Alfred appears on the Electoral Roll

1939 Walsingham – Alfred, incapacitated due to illness, lived at Lawn View Terrace, Walsingham with Nelly. Alfred was supported by the Oddfellows Society, one of the government’s approved societies to administer National Insurance

Alfred and Nelly’s children were, Alfred, Edward, Frederick 28/3/1920, and Gwendoline Nelly 3/7/1914

Alfred died in 1946 in Fakenham.

Albert Edward Blunkett

1891 – Albert, his brother William, and his parents lived with his grandfather George Blunkett, and uncle Sanders Blunkett at Lime Terrace, Egham Surrey. His father Arthur was a granary man and his grandfather a labourer/roadman

1901 – Albert was an inmate of the Windsor Union Workhouse with his brother William, placed there after their father deserted the family. Helen Blunkett came to Kettlestone to live with her father and brought her youngest son Walter with her.

1911 – Albert was working as a stableman at a racing stable in Lambourn, Berkshire

1914/1918 – Gunner Albert Edward Blunkett (regimental number 124794) served with the Royal Horse artillery. Royal Field Artillery

1918 – Albert married Margaret May Robinson in Colchester, Essex

1919 – Albert appeared on the Absentee Voters list, living in the village of Kettlestone

Albert was awarded the Victory and the British Army medal

1920 Kettlestone Electoral Register – Albert was living in Kettlestone

1939 Colchester, Essex. Albert was a general labourer on Butterwick farm, Colchester, Essex living with his wife Margaret

Margaret died 1962, Albert is listed as a retired store keeper in Margaret’s probate

Albert Edward Blunkett died 25th November 1979, aged 91, in Colchester, Essex. He left £14,329 in his will

William James Blunkett

1901 – William was an inmate of the Windsor workhouse with his brother Albert, placed there after their father deserted the family. Helen Blunkett came to Kettlestone to live with her father and brought her youngest son Walter with her.

1911 – William was a 2nd Footman, living in Tonbridge, Kent

1914/18 – Gunner William James Blunkett (regimental number 61547) served with the Royal Field Artillery

William was awarded the British and Victory medals

1937 August – William (of Greenway Road, Fakenham) travelled to the USA to work as a Butler (he made several transatlantic journeys at that time)

1942 - William was again travelling to the USA to work as a Butler

1942 – William James’ name appeared on a WW2 Draft registration card (aged 52)

1972 – Albert married Florence Stocks in Bournmouth

18th September 1982 William James Blunkett died, aged 92, in Bournemouth, Dorset. He left £13,745 in his will

1911 – Walter was living with his mother Helen and his grandfather James Tennant, a retired farm labourer, in Kettlestone, Norfolk. Walter was working as a page boy

1914/17 – Rifleman Walter Blunkett (regimental numbers 4242/391414) served with the 9th London Regiment, Queen Victoria’s Rifles

Walter was killed in action, aged 22, on 13th August 1917 in France and Flanders, Belgium. He is buried in the Hooge Crater Cemetery, Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium

Walter’s effects were sent home to Clay Pit Cottages, Fakenham, to his mother Helen Blunkett

Walter was awarded the British and Victory medals.

1918 – Javis was wounded whilst on active service in France, receiving several gunshots to his limbs. He was hospitalised in Dudley hospital, and was awarded a gratuity of £65

A newspaper report from the Yarmouth Independent on July 8th 1916, cited that the Harriers, of the 2/5 Norfolk regiment, were accompanied on their race by CSM R.W.Fuller leaving camp somewhere in the North of England

1914/18 – Acting Company Sergeant Major/Clr Sergeant Major Robert Fuller (regimental number 24009) served with The Norfolk Regiment and 7th Norfolks

1911 – Austin lived with his family of eleven in Kettlestone. Austin, and his father, were farm labourers

1914 - 15th September – Private Austin John Green (regimental no 3/7306) served with the Norfolk Regiment

1918 - Austin was wounded, one of the many casualties reported in the paper on 16/1/1918, he was also mentioned in the Rev Share’s diary as having entered Jerusalem

1919 – Austin appears on the Kettlestone Absentee Voters list, living in the village

1911 – Laurence was living in Kettlestone. His father was now working for the Midland Railway as a platelayer, Laurence was working as a cattle feeder

Although we don’t at present have any of Laurence’s WW1 details, he does appear on the Kettlestone War Memorial

1921 – Laurence was working as a fitter living at 10 Beaconsfield Road, Willesdon, London

11th June 1921 – Laurence married Maud Elsie Clarke, from Kettlestone, in Willesdon, London. His father Charles was described as a Platelayer on their marriage certificate

Maud Elsie was Javez Clarke’s twin sister. Laurence and Maud had a daughter, Beryl Lilian born 7th May 1923

1939 – Laurence lived at 71 Barmouth Avenue, Ealing, London, and worked as a Millwright

1961 – Laurence is still living at the same address with his daughter Beryl, who remained unmarried. Beryl may have died in 1994 in Kings Lynn, Norfolk

When Albert signed up to join the war effort he was living in East End, Docking. Two years later the family were all living in Kettlestone

1917/19 – Private Albert Ephraim Greeves (regimental number A/205330) served with the Kings Royal Rifles and the Norfolk regiment. Albert was described as a Farmer, on his short service papers

Albert Greeves is mentioned in the Weekly Casualty list 8th October 1918 as PREVIOUSLY REPORTED MISSING NOW REPORTED PRISONER OF WAR. It states on Albert’s service papers that he was captured 21st March 2018.

1919 – Albert appeared on the Absentee Voters list, living in The Street, Kettlestone, Norfolk

Albert was discharged on 29th March 1919 with a diseased heart and sickness. He received £30 gratuity for a left lung which was considered 20% disabled

1920 – Albert appeared on the Electoral Roll living in Kettlestone

Albert married Dorothy Gentleman in 1923, in Walsingham, Norfolk

1939 Albert was living in Long Yard, Colkirk with his wife Dorothy, daughter Audrey and two further children. Albert was working as a contractor’s labourer, teacher and dustman

1914/18 Private Arthur Frederick Harrison (regimental no 231317) served with the Canadian Infantry 50th Battalion

Arthur Frederick Harrison died, aged 28, on 2nd September 1918 in France and Flanders. Arthur is buried in the Dury Crucifix Cemetery

Sidney Harrison

Born 1887 Cranwich, Norfolk.

1891 – Sidney was living with his family, his father was a yardman, near the Hall in Beetley, Norfolk

1901 - Sidney was living with his family in Stody Road, Erpingham, Norfolk. Sidney was working as a groom

Sidney married Edith May Yarham (born 27/10/1891) in Bale church on 26th December 1910

1911 – Sidney was living with his parents in Bale, and working as a horse keeper, his wife, Edith May appears as May E Harrison

When Sidney signed, in Cromer, up they were living in Kettlestone

1914/18 Sergeant Sidney Harrison (regimental no 179486 and 46553) served with both the Northumberland Fusiliers and the 15th Durham Light Infantry

In 1917 Sidney received gunshot wounds to his thigh and was transferred to England to the general hospital to recover. He must then have returned to active service as he was wounded again in October 1918

Sidney Harrison died from his wounds, he was at a casualty clearing station 29 France at Delsaux Farm, Beugny, France, received in action on 26th October 1918 in France and Flanders

Sidney is buried at Delsaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny in II. E. 19. Edith would have received, along with Sidney’s medals, a memorial plaque and scroll

Sidney was awarded the British war medal and Victory medal

Edith was awarded a pension of 96s 8d a week for herself and her two children, Alfred Sidney Ernest (born 28/8/1915) and Eva Mary Ann (born 24/1/1918)

In order for Edith to remain in the tithe cottage after Sidney’s death, she had to have a farm worker as a lodger, which is how James Newstead came to be living in Kettlestone after the war

On 7th January 1915 all former service was forfeited and Dennis was discharged from the army. On 15th February 1915 it was stated that Dennis was unlikely to become an efficient soldier.
