THE RECTOR PREVENTS A BIGAMOUS MARRIAGE

JAN 19TH 1917 Notice of bans of marriage between James Jenner and Edith Sayer of this parish given in by the said James Jenner The man is a soldier in the R.A.M.C. and formerly of the royal Sussex Regiment. He at the time was stationed in Fakenham. In a military offence he was confined to barracks at Norwich and then suspicion was roused. The Rector at once postponed the banns and made enquiry at the man’s home parish Polegate in Hailsham Sussex. The result of this enquiry is that the curate in charge certified that the man is married and has a wife and child living at Polegate. Fortunately the banns were neither entered in the book nor published.

SAD ACCIDENT AT MANOR HOUSE FARM

March 1st 1917 A young man Charles William Travis [18] thrown from horse near pond opposite Manor House Farm. He died at 2 a.m. next morning. Parents Hindringham people.

March 3rd 1917 A coroners’ inquest at Manor House Farm on the death of the young man Travis. The deputy coroner attended, the superintendant of police, local constable and newspaper reporters. Verdict accidental death

March 6th Burial of the young man Travis at Hindringham

BLAZE ON COMMON

May 6TH 1917 Terrific blaze on the common in the early hours of the morning set alight by Walter Lacey. Much damage done to herbage from end to end of common. Advice sought of the charity commissioners. The parish council and trustees much aggrieved and determined to do their utmost to put a stop to such irregular and harmful proceedings

AN EVANGELIST ARRIVES

28th October 1917 A lay preacher calling himself an evangelist made his appearance in the place, with the intention of holding services in a cottage between the Rectory and White Horse Inn
